Best time to kitesurf in Croatia: the Maestral season

May to September is prime kitesurfing season in Croatia. Learn how the thermal Maestral works, the most reliable months, and when beginners get the best conditions.

When is the kitesurfing season in Croatia?

The Croatian kite season runs from May to September, with the most reliable thermal wind between June and August.

These months combine warm water, long daylight and the dependable Maestral — exactly the conditions beginners want.

What is the Maestral wind?

The Maestral is a northwesterly thermal wind that builds almost every clear summer afternoon as the land heats up and draws air off the sea.

It typically blows 10–20 knots: clean and steady rather than gusty, which makes it close to perfect for learning.

Best months for beginners vs improvers

July and August give the most consistent daily thermal, so first-timers can count on getting on the water nearly every afternoon.

June and September are quieter and can bring slightly stronger systems — great for improvers who want more power and fewer crowds.

Mornings are often calm and glassy — ideal for an e-foil session or a relaxed coffee at the beach bar.

The Maestral usually fills in early afternoon, peaks late afternoon, then eases toward evening. We schedule lessons around that window.

The other winds: Bura and Jugo

Outside high summer the stronger Bura (NE) and Jugo (SE) can appear, bringing more challenging conditions for advanced riders.
